7 All-Natural Astringents For The Face

Astringents are like toners, except that they’re alcohol/chemical based and not water-based. So, they can be especially helpful to shrink and close pores. Apart from that, they also serve to regulate the pH balance of skin, reduce oil production, control acne and more.

While there are many commercial astringents available in the market, natural variants are also plenty. These can be gentler on the skin and avoid unnecessary irritation. Let’s look at the top astringents in this category.

1. Rose Water

One of the gentler option out there is rosewater, being suitable for pretty much any skin type. Rosewater is great for soothing the skin and gently nourishing it. It rarely causes any tingling sensations and is often mixed with other ingredients.

2. Tea Tree Oil

A tea tree oil solution is highly anti-bacterial and thus serves great as an acne treatment. Also, it can reduce skin infections, speed up the healing process and prevent future breakouts.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV having countless benefits can be described as pretty much a ‘health drug’. Though it is commonly drunken, that is a topic for another day. When applied on to skin, it can even prevent age spots and wrinkles from occurring. If that wasn’t enough, this vinegar also heals sunburn and exfoliates.

4. Witch Hazel

Commonly used with huge proportions of alcohol, witch hazel also comes in an alcohol-free versions. Witch hazel is notorious for causing side-effects, so it’s a good idea to do a patch test first.

5. Green Tea

Many of us are aware of the cancer-fighting incredibly healthy beverage green tea! Well, it turns out applying the exact same liquid onto your skin (when cooled) can do wonders. A green tea toner is full of antioxidants to enhance the skin’s natural texture.

6. Cucumber Water

Not so widely known, but cucumber toners are mild and versatile solutions. Both dry and oily skin benefit from it and it leaves the skin revitalised.

7. Mint + Lemon

Mint and lemon when combined give rise to a strong astringent or can be used on their own as well. Unlike the others, they also promote a glowing complexion and lighten dark spots. If you’ve got hyperpigmentation, this works quite fast to treat it. A lot of water is usually needed to dilute these powerful substances.
