7 Basic Makeup Brushes You Need To Get Started

I like to think of makeup as a creative art form, or as a medium to express oneself. And though perfection requires practice, you must be equipped with the right tools in the first place. You’ll find loads of beauty equipment to choose from. However, there are certain staples that should be in every girl’s makeup bag. Irrespective of whether you prefer the heavy glam look or natural aesthetic, the following brush types are essential.

The Beauty Sponge

Function: Makeup sponges are best suited for blending in foundation or concealer. Although some have a tendency to waste product, this shouldn’t really be a problem if you dampen them before using. If used correctly, they give a flawless airbrushed appearance. Dry skin types usually find amazing results with this.

Foundation Brush

Function: These brushes are for applying liquid/cream foundations onto the skin. Great at building up coverage, all skin types work well with them.

Powder Brush

Function: Also referred to as a blush brush, feel free to dab on any powder, bronzer or blush using this. It’s the ultimate versatile piece of any collection.

Concealer Brush

Function: Just like the name rightly suggests, this one’s utilised for effectively absorbing concealer. Unlike other options, you can even try this to cover smaller areas.

Contour Brush

Function: The unique shape is specifically designed to tone and sculpt the face. With the brush, contouring the cheekbone, brow bone and nose becomes extremely easy.

Fan Brush

Function: My absolute favourite type of makeup brush! It’s mainly used for applying highlighter, but also wiping off excess product.

Eye Shader Brush

Function: Yes, there are many varieties of eyeshadow brushes. The first one that you should be purchasing from them is the shader brush. This is used for smoothly gliding on product on your eyelids.

So, that’s all for the beginner’s guide to makeup brushes. I’ve covered the more advanced ones in my next post @
